Teaching English and starting a recycling bank in China

International volunteers are invited in Gongcheng County to support the local population in different educational, renovation and environmental conservation projects.

The volunteers will work in village schools, organising educational and cultural exchange activities for the students to help them improve their English. Games will also be used as a tool for encouraging the kids to speak English. During school holidays (from mid January to the end of February and from mid July to the end of August), the volunteers will work with children in children centres.

Another task for the group will be the renovation and protection of some historic buildings in Gongcheng. This may involve repairing a stone road, clearing a yard or work on small gardens around the buildings, etc.

The volunteers will also help start a recycling bank in the area. First, they will help build and operate the recycling bank where the garbage can be separated or incinerated. Then the volunteers will run a campaign in the nearby villages about garbage separation and recycling, and the importance of keeping the environment clean. The volunteers can use their creativity and imagination to demonstrate that recycling can be fun, e.g making a fish from plastic bottle or paper, making a small flower from straw, making an apron from milk box. The group can also help to make recycle bins.

Location: Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County is located in north-east of Guangxi Province, bordering on Yangshuo town to the west, 108 km away from Guilin city.
Most of the children are orphans or abandoned, some have mild to medium levels of learning or mental disabilities. The home also provides support to families who are temporarily unable to take care of their kids. The parents are being encouraged and taught effective parenting skills while the children stay in the social home. The establishment also runs a Crisis center, which serves as an emergency shelter for abused and traumatized children or those from problem families.
Another program of the Social home is for social and professional integration. It prepares for independent living 17 - 20 years old youths who grew up in this or other similar facilities throughout the country. During the day they attend vocational training courses, but the volunteers may meet and spend time with some of them in the evenings and weekends.
The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. That's why the interaction with other young people from different countries while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project effectively supports their socialization and adapting to life in mainstream society.
The main objective of the project is establishing intercultural social contact between the children of Rodopski pansion and the group of international volunteers from all parts of the world, as well as improving children's communication skills.
You and your creativity and lively attitude can be the best donation.
Would you like to test yourself and get an unforgettable social experience?
Would you like to find new friends?
Don't wait!
Help, Learn, Discover (Ecuador)

Thinking about volunteering abroad?
Think no more, we've got what you're looking for!

Help, Learn & Discover is an organization which offers 28-day long educational and volunteer programs in Ecuador, South America. These programs are three-fold and provide students with the opportunity to Help those less fortunate, Learn about and gain firsthand experience in a specific academic area of interest, and Discover the diverse terrains of Ecuador during a tour of the country. Help, Learn & Discover currently offers three programs: Pre-Medical, Bio-Medical and Volunteer.

HELP

Each program contains a common volunteer component which enables students to offer help to communities in rural villages of Ecuador. Students fundraise in Canada and the United States and then travel to Ecuador in the summer to participate in a specific large-scale volunteer project. This year approximately 150 students will travel to Ecuador over a five-month period and help finance and build homes for underprivileged families in a rural Ecuadorian village. This rewarding experience will require students to take active roles in the construction of the project. Students work alongside local families and are able to watch the homes grow and become an integral part of the community.

LEARN

The Pre-Medical program is ideal for those interested in a future career in health-care. Students work alongside in observation with leading surgeons and other health-care professionals, shadowing through five different wards within a hospital setting. This program is ideal whether you're certain that you want to become a doctor, exploring the idea or just curious about medicine and health care. In the Bio-Medical program students enjoy a combination of the pre-medical program with a week discovering the unique species and ecosystems of the enchanted Galapagos Islands. Finally, with the Volunteer program students will use their extra week to work further with the community to help develop their homes and learn about their culture.

DISCOVER

To conclude this amazing journey, students will tour through the jungles, rainforest, and coastal beaches of Ecuador, testing their limits with activities such as hiking, bungee jumping, paragliding and surfing. In turn, students will discover more about themselves while learning all this beautiful and exciting country has to offer.

Programs are offered in select months of May, June, July, August and September of 2012. Please visit the website for information on specific dates, program structure, pricing and schedules of upcoming information sessions at your school. You can also view pictures and read about the amazing experiences of previous participants.

Protecting the Marine Turtles at Colola

                          February 1 - February 17, 2012
February 22 - March 9, 2012

For over 14 years this project has been organized in the Turtle Camp at Colola Beach with extraordinary results. This project is the source of many beautiful stories; hundreds of volunteers from all over the world had participated. The aim of this projects is to protect the marine turtles working in tight collaboration with the local population who lives in Colola Town or as they say "the place where dreams come true". Volunteers along with local people will realize activities to protect the turtles, and will help to ensure the survival of the turtles for the future generations. There are two species of turtles arriving to this area: Negra (Black Turtle) and Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle), the size of the turtles vary from 1 meter to 1.5 meters long and the weight from 40 kg to 100 kg. Every turtle makes a nest of around 150 eggs. If you like nature, to spend time in an astonishing beautiful virgin beach far away from hotels and tourists, and witness the magic that nature had made for millions of years, this project is for you!
The main work consists in patrolling the beach at night, finding the adult turtles and collecting the eggs, burying them in a secure place (vivero in Spanish) and setting the baby turtles free back in to the ocean. This must be carried out by night since turtles do not go out the ocean by day (because of natural predators, it is safer for turtles to get out the ocean in the dark). In collaboration with local indigenous people from Colola, volunteers will seek for the turtles taking care of their eggs and the baby turtles. Locals are very friendly and working with them is very pleasant as they explain to the group what to do. We need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in this project willing to interact with the local people and their culture.
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets or helping to arrange an all purpose playground for the children and maybe some cleaning tasks, but it depends on your initiative! Local people are very open to participate in other activities and volunteers can also propose their own initiatives, so your ideas will be welcomed!
The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

General rules and conditions for participation on our workcamp projects: www.cadip.org

Reykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, culture, nature, clean air - and Reykjavik has them in spades. All the advantages of a modern, forward-looking society are complemented by the beautiful natural setting. In a country of only just over 300,000 people, the Reykjavik Capital Area has a population of about 200,000. However, since it's the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger center elsewhere in the world.
Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital city and is centered on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula. Come at the right time of year, and in favorable conditions you will see the city's skyline silhouetted against the glowing, shimmering curtain of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Reykjavik is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay to the north, while rugged lava-fields spread to the southeast. On a clear sunny day, the Snaefellsjokull glacier glitters on the western horizon like a crystal.
The aim of this project is to give volunteers the opportunity to learn about the myths and legends of runes and the old Viking religion. Volunteers create runes out of Icelandic volcanic magic stones, producing enough for the participant to take one set home and to leave others in the cultural centre in Reykjavik.
During the project, volunteers will collect volcanic stones from specific places in the west part of Iceland where nature has shaped and made really beautiful magic stones. Afterwards they will convert the stones into runes in the workshop in Reykjavik. The volunteers will learn about the history of the places where the stones come from, as well as the importance of the healing energy of the stones. The workcamp will include a visit to Snæfellsnes, the location of the glacier Snæfellsjökull, which is famous for the power and energy that many spiritually-minded people sense. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth.
